Drywall Finishing Levels: What You Need to Know
When it comes to drywall installation, the finishing touches can make all the difference. The Gypsum Association has defined five distinct drywall finishing levels, each with its own unique characteristics. In this guide, we'll break down each level, helping you determine the best fit for your project.
Drywall Finishing Levels Explained
- Level 0: Boards Hung Only
No finishing work has been done, and the drywall boards are simply fastened to the walls or ceiling. - Level 1: Joint Tape Embedded
Drywall joint tape has been embedded in the joint compound at the seams, but no further work has been done. - Level 2: Thin Coat of Joint Compound
A thin coat of joint compound has been applied over the tape and screw holes. This level is suitable for areas that will be covered with tile or used for storage. - Level 3: Additional Coat of Joint Compound
An additional coat of joint compound has been applied to the tape and screws. This level is suitable for areas that will receive a heavy texture. - Level 4: Classic Drywall Finish
An additional coat of joint compound has been applied, and the dried compound has been sanded. This level is suitable for areas that will be painted or covered with wallpaper. - Level 5: Premium Finish
A skim coat of joint compound has been applied to a Level 4 finish. This level is suitable for areas that will receive glossy paint or be subject to low-angle lighting.
Choosing the Right Drywall Finishing Level
Consider the purpose and location of the space when selecting a drywall finishing level:
- Garages and workshops: Level 1 or 2 may be sufficient.
- Wainscot-hidden wall surfaces: Level 1 or 2 may be sufficient.
- Cabinet-hidden walls: Level 1 or 2 may be sufficient.
- Ceilings: Level 4 or 5 recommended.
By understanding the different drywall finishing levels, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that meets your needs and budget.
